The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
