The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
