A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
